An optional driver's airbag became available on the E23 in April 1985, making it one of the first cars sold with one, and a South African 745i won the South African Modified Saloon Car Championship in 1985, the only BMW sanctioned motorsport use of a 7 Series. The year also had BMW's E23 as an established luxury saloon, in the last full model years of its production. The ABS system had been an E23 feature from its early years.
