The E23 reached its fifth year in 1981 as the sole 7 Series, a four door saloon with six cylinder engines sold in Europe, the United States and Japan. The turbocharged 745i remained as the performance flagship in European left hand drive markets, and the design was just one year from its first major facelift, scheduled to arrive in the 1983 model year. Next year, in 1982, BMW would upgrade the engine of the 745i and begin making the facelifted cars.
