E24 cars produced after June 1987 were fitted with ellipsoid headlamps, in line with the recently introduced E32 7 Series, and in 1987 the equivalent M6 model for North America was introduced. The E24 was updated to keep it competitive, though the 8 Series was in development as its successor, and the final M635CSi would be made in 1989. The 1987 update brought the coupe into line with the E32 7 Series, which had the same headlamps.
