By 1981 the E24 6 Series was in its sixth year of production and was sold as a two door coupe in the 628CSi, 633CSi and 635CSi forms. It shared many parts with the E12 5 Series that preceded it, and a major update with parts from the new E28 5 Series was coming in the following year. A total of 86,216 E24 cars were built by April 1989. The cars of that year still had the earlier chassis and a rear suspension that would be revised in 1982.
