The 525td joined the diesel range in 1991 as the 525tds, replacing the 524td, and the 3.8 liter version of the M5 was shown to the public at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 1991 alongside the debut of the E34 M5 Touring. Sales in the United States and Europe were strong as the E34 matured as BMW's mid size executive car. The 525tds also introduced a turbocharged intercooled diesel to the 5 Series, replacing the 524td of 1988.
