1981 BMW 5 Series (E12)

Automobiles

The E12 was replaced by the E28 in 1981, although the tooling was sent to South Africa where E12 assembly continued, with E28 interiors, until 1984 or 1985. The first generation 5 Series thus ended its European life after nine years and a total production of 699,094 cars, having established BMW as a maker of executive saloons and the 5 Series name as one of its core model ranges. The E28 was introduced in the autumn, and the 6 Series coupe continued on the older platform until 1982.
