Production of the E12 began in June 1972 and the 5 Series was launched with two models, the carburetted 520 with a Stromberg constant pressure carburettor and the manifold injected 520i with a Kugelfischer injection pump. It took over from the New Class saloons and was drawn by Paul Bracq with Marcello Gandini of Bertone as co designer, after the 2200ti Garmisch concept shown at Geneva in 1970. The E12 would go on to total 699,094 cars.
