North American sales began with the 1975 model year, when the only 5 Series sold in the United States was the 530i, powered by a fuel injected straight six engine. The model was therefore an expensive import to the American public. Elsewhere the E12 continued to be sold in the European range, and the 5 Series was now two and a half years into its production life. The E12 had by now been on sale in Europe for three years and the United States was a new market for BMW's executive car.
