Several additions came in 1993. The convertible appeared, and the compact three door hatchback, based on a shortened E36 platform, was introduced. The passenger airbag became available from this year's production, the M40 four cylinder engine was replaced by the M43 and the diesel 325tds with an intercooler arrived. The 3 Series was now offered in four distinct body styles. All of these cars used the new multilink rear suspension apart from the hatchback.
