The E36 began to be phased out in 1998, when the new E46 arrived, starting with the four door saloon, whose production ended this year. The other E36 body styles carried on a little longer through 1999, and the Compact hatchback until 2000. The Z3 roadster continued on a modified E36 platform in the meantime. The coupe, the convertible, the Touring and the Compact were not affected until the following year, and carried on until 1999 and 2000.
