In 1997 the E36 was in the last stretch of its life. The coupe, convertible and Touring were all still on the market, along with the Compact hatchback and the four door saloon, while BMW got ready for the E46, which was shown in November of this year. The wide choice of engines, from a 1.6 liter four to the 3.2 liter M3 six, kept the car popular in Europe. Production was shared between four factories on three continents.
