Production of the E30 began to wind down in 1990, when the new E36 coupe models arrived. In South Africa a 325iS was launched in the first half of the year using a 2.7 liter engine tuned by Alpina, making 197 horsepower, ready for local racing. The last convertibles and Touring models, the body styles that would outlive the saloon, continued to be built. The Frankfurt launched Series 2 cars of 1987 had been largely unchanged since, and the E30 was now in its eighth year.
