In 1984 an engineer named Max Reisbock built a prototype of the estate that would become the Touring, working in a friend's garage, three years before it reached production. The E30 also began sales in North America this year in the 318i and the 325e forms, recognisable by the protruding aluminium bumpers that owners call diving boards. BMW built the E30 in three countries. The 318i used the M10 engine until 1985 in the United States.
