This was a big year for the E21. At the Frankfurt show BMW unveiled the new six cylinder variants with the M20 engine, replacing the four cylinder 320 with the 320/6 and adding the top 323i, which carried 2.3 liters and disc brakes on all four wheels. The car also went on sale in the United States as the 320i from the 1977 model year, with large bumpers and a detuned engine. The 323i reached 100 km/h in 8.7 seconds and gave the E21 a more upmarket character.
