The G42 2 Series coupe was revealed in July 2021 as the successor to the F22 coupe and F23 convertible, and its production commenced on 2 September 2021. It was the first BMW vehicle designed by BMW of Mexico and the first 2 Series to be built at the plant in San Luis Potosi in Mexico. It remained a rear wheel drive car, while other 2 Series models went to front wheel drive. It was the second generation of the model and the successor to a car that had been built in Leipzig.
