The F40 was the third generation 1 Series and the first to switch to front wheel drive, using BMW's UKL2 platform shared with the Mini, and it was sold only as a five door hatchback. It premiered at the 2019 Frankfurt Auto Show and was launched on 28 September 2019 with the option of all wheel drive still available. The updated M135i was revealed in October 2021, and the F70 replaced the car in 2024. Its model years run from 2019 to 2024.
