In October 2021 BMW revealed an updated M135i, the sporty version of the F40 1 Series, which had been launched two years before. The F40 was a front wheel drive five door hatchback and the 2021 refresh kept its position at the bottom of the BMW range, above the Mini that shared its underpinnings but below the 2 Series Gran Coupe. The model had been launched in September 2019 and was in its second full model year in 2021.
