The F40 premiered at the 2019 Frankfurt Auto Show and was launched on 28 September 2019, as the third generation of the 1 Series. It was a break with the past as the car switched to a front wheel drive layout, retaining the all wheel drive option, and was offered only as a five door hatchback. The previous F20 had been rear wheel drive for the first two generations. It replaced the rear wheel drive F20, whose production ended in July 2019.
