In 1963 the Austin Mini was in its fourth year on sale, an Austin version of the transverse engined small car for which the system had been developed by Alex Moulton for the larger Morris 1100 launched in 1962. The Mini would gain Hydrolastic suspension the next year. It continued to be built at BMC's Longbridge plant in Birmingham, next to the company's headquarters, and at Cowley. The Mini was by then the most popular small car in Britain.
