1958 Austin Gipsy

Automobiles

The Gipsy went into production in 1958 as a lower cost replacement for the Austin Champ, built to compete directly with the Land Rover of Rover. Like the Land Rover it was aimed at both civilian and military markets. Its sophisticated independent suspension all round used rubber Flexitor springs developed by Alex Moulton, which let it travel fast over rough terrain, and later models offered leaf springs on the front as an option.
