By November 1954 the civilian Champ was priced at 1,000 pounds, up from 750 pounds two years earlier, and it sold poorly outside the army. Rolls-Royce had built the engines for the early production vehicles, but later ones were fitted with a nearly identical engine that Austin built itself under licence. The Champ was in its fourth year of production in 1954. The army kept buying the military version in this period.
