For 2001 the TL received a redesigned cupholder insert, and Acura introduced the CL Type S, a sportier trim of the CL that was mechanically identical to the TL but never sold nearly as well. The five-speed automatic in these cars was defective, and Acura extended its warranty to 109,000 miles or 7.75 years, with dealers replacing the transmissions. Replacements made before March 2005 often failed again.
