The Western Star 4800 Series sat above the 4700 in the Western Star line, with more powerful engine options and a 109-inch bumper-to-back-of-cab length. Western Star supplied it as a bare chassis and cab so that a bodybuilding company could fit a dump body, mixer, tank, crane or other structure to the customer's order, and a factory-installed twin steer option was popular for dump and mixer work. Tractor versions were also offered. Western Star, which DaimlerChrysler bought in 2000 and placed in its Freightliner Trucks division, now lists the 4800 among the models it previously offered.
