The Wartburg Motorwagen was the first automobile built in Eisenach, named after the castle that overlooks the town. The Fahrzeugfabrik Eisenach, founded in 1896 to make bicycles and guns, decided in 1898 to build cars as well. Heinrich Ehrhardt, a shareholder of the firm, bought the sole licence to build the French Decauville Voiturelle, a light voiturette, so that a competitive product could reach the market quickly. The first test car was finished before Christmas 1898 and sales began in early 1899, at prices between 3,500 and 3,950 marks, with roughly 250 cars built. It was a small rear-driven phaeton on a tubular frame, powered by a two-cylinder engine of 764 cc, with a top speed of about 40 km/h and unbraked front wheels. A luxury touring version and a covered promenade version for women were offered besides the plain car. The Wartburg car name ended in 1904, when the Ehrhardt family left and the vehicle licences were lost, and the firm continued its cars under the new Dixi brand.
