The Wartburg 353, sold in some export markets as the Wartburg Knight, was a medium-sized family car built by AWE for its Wartburg brand from 1966 to 1989, the longest production run of any Wartburg. It succeeded the 311 and was in turn followed by the 1.3. Its design traced back to a 1938 DKW layout, and it used a one-litre, three-cylinder two-stroke engine of about 50 to 55 PS driving the front wheels through a gearbox with a freewheel. It came as a sedan, a Tourist estate and a Trans pickup that was sold only for export, and carried a 525-litre trunk. A front facelift came in 1985, and in 1988 it was replaced by the 1.3 with a Volkswagen-designed four-stroke engine. Owners nicknamed it Trustworthy Hans.
