Wartburg 313

Automobiles

The Wartburg 313 was the sports roadster of VEB Automobilwerk Eisenach, sold as the Wartburg Sport and built from 1957 until 1960 on the underpinnings of the Wartburg 311. It had a longer bonnet and three side vents that set it apart from the saloon, and a three-cylinder two-stroke engine giving between 37 and 50 hp and a top speed of about 140 km/h. It came with a removable hardtop or a folding top, and the folding-top car was a true two-seater. Production began at Eisenach and later moved partly to the Dresden body works, and only 469 were built, of which 143 were exported. Its looks have been compared with the Porsche 356 and the Mercedes 300 SL, though its performance was far more modest.
