The Wartburg 1.3 was a medium-sized family car made by Automobilwerk Eisenach between October 1988 and April 1991, an updated Wartburg 353 with a 1.3-litre four-stroke, four-cylinder engine also used in the second generation Volkswagen Polo, in place of the old one-litre two-stroke three-cylinder unit. The engine, built under licence in Karl-Marx-Stadt, was too long to fit the old body, so the front end was entirely new, the track was widened and the gear shifter moved to the floor. It cost nearly twice as much as the 353 W and sold slowly. A pickup called the 1.3 Trans was built in about 920 examples, and 152,757 cars were made in all, about half for export, before production ended on 10 April 1991.
