Union Pacific Class S-6

Steam and Early Locomotives

The Union Pacific Class S-6 was a group of thirty 0-6-0 switcher type steam locomotives that the Lima Locomotive Works built for the Union Pacific Railroad in the autumn of 1920. They were small engines designed for yard switching, the work of shunting cars and making up trains, rather than for hauling trains over the road. Union Pacific began retiring the class in 1947 and removed the last one from service in 1962. Several went to industrial owners, including a cement company in Laramie, Wyoming, a terminal company in St. Joseph, Missouri and a mining company in Idaho. Two survive on static display, number 4455 at the Colorado Railroad Museum and number 4466 at the California State Railroad Museum in Sacramento.
