The Standard Vanguard was a car produced by the Standard Motor Company in Coventry, England, from 1947 until 1963. Its name recalled HMS Vanguard, the last Royal Navy battleship, launched in 1944. A wet-liner overhead-valve engine of 85 mm bore and 92 mm stroke, essentially the one Standard made for the Ferguson TE20 tractor, powered the range until the Six of 1960, with 68 bhp in early form. An estate car, a utility pick-up and a 12 cwt delivery van were added, and with the Triumph Renown the Vanguard was in 1950 the first car fitted with a Laycock de Normanville overdrive. Almost all early output was exported.
