Standard Herald

Automobiles

The Standard Herald was the Indian-built version of the Triumph Herald, produced by Standard Motor Products of India in Madras from 1961. The Triumph Herald was the small British car introduced by Standard-Triumph, and in India it carried the Standard name; the early cars were heavily dependent on British parts, but local content rose steadily until by 1965 the engines, gearboxes and axles were all made in India. The Tens and later Heralds and Gazels all used versions of the 948 cc Standard-Triumph four-cylinder engine. In 1966 the Herald Mark II appeared with the bonnet and front end of the Triumph Vitesse, and in 1968 the Mark III, made until 1971, received a unique indigenously developed four-door body to suit large Indian families and to compete with the Ambassador and the Fiat 1100. A few Mark III Companion five-door estates followed, and in 1972 the car was redesigned as the Standard Gazel.
