The Standard Flying Eight was the smallest member of the pre-war Standard Flying family, launched in late September 1938 as the company's first entry in the 8 hp market. Apart from its power unit it was an all-new design, with a box-section chassis frame and independent front suspension by a transverse leaf spring, which made it the first British 8 hp family car with that feature. The 1,021 cc side-valve four-cylinder engine developed 31 bhp at 4,000 rpm and drove through a three-speed gearbox with cable-operated Bendix brakes. A two-door all-steel saloon and a two to four-seat open tourer were available from the launch, with a Mulliner drophead coupe added around the turn of 1938 and 1939. Autocar road tests recorded a top speed close to 62 mph. Production at Canley continued into early 1940, and the post-war 8 hp followed it.
