Standard Ensign

Automobiles

The Standard Ensign was a basic, cheaper car in the Standard range, announced in October 1957 and restyled by Giovanni Michelotti. It shared its body with the Vanguard Series III but had a cheapened specification, with a mesh front grille and a simplified instrument panel and dashboard, and a 1670 cc engine. Despite that it was the first Vanguard-based car to have a four-speed gearbox, with the lever moved from the column to the floor and overdrive optional. Many were bought for company fleets and the armed forces. Production of the original ceased in 1961 after 18,852 examples, including 901 Mk II cars built only in 1961, and an Ensign De Luxe with a 2138 cc engine, also offered as an estate car, followed in 1962 and 1963. A Perkins P4C diesel version was announced in January 1960. The Ensign and the Vanguard were both replaced by the Triumph 2000 in 1963.
