The Standard Big Nine was a small four-cylinder family car introduced by the Standard Motor Company of Coventry in 1930, before the worst of the Depression. With it the company kept a complete range alongside the six-cylinder Ensign and Envoy. Standardisation was taken a step further with this model, because the bodies on the nine horsepower four-cylinder car and the fifteen horsepower six-cylinder car were almost indistinguishable except for the length of the bonnet. Grace's Guide lists it as a 9.9 hp car with a 1,287 cc side-valve four-cylinder engine, built from 1930 to 1933. The Big Nine was soon followed by the larger Big Twelve, and Standard's sales in the second half of 1931 exceeded those of the whole of the previous year, which made the early 1930s a recovery period for the firm.
