Southern Pacific GS-6 class

Steam and Early Locomotives

Sixteen semi-streamlined 4-8-4 Northern type steam locomotives built by the Lima Locomotive Works, ten for the Southern Pacific Railroad as numbers 4460 through 4469 and six for the Western Pacific Railroad as numbers 481 through 486. They ran from 1943 to 1958 on the Southern Pacific and from 1943 to 1953 on the Western Pacific. Wartime rules from the War Production Board refused a streamlined passenger order, so the Southern Pacific redesigned them for general service, without side skirting or the Daylight colours. The Western Pacific, which called its engines GS-64s, added Franklin boosters and elephant ear smoke deflectors. They worked the San Joaquin Daylight, commuter trains and freight. Southern Pacific number 4460 survives at the National Museum of Transportation in St. Louis.
