The Scammell S24 was a heavy range of tractors that replaced the Contractor, developed by Scammell for Leyland as the Landtrain, the overseas bonneted heavy range of the late 1970s. It used the same cab and bonnet as the Commander replacement, and was offered in 6x4 and 6x6 formats with manual, automatic or torque converter and manual transmissions and a newly developed transfer gearbox for the 6x6. The range covered weights from 40 tonnes gross vehicle weight to more than 200 tonnes gross train weight, with the Cummins NT 350 or 400 engine and an American-type crew pod behind the cab. A military 6x6 and an 8x6 hooklift version for the British Army followed, and Unipower bought the S24 range when the Watford factory closed in July 1988.
