The Scammell Routeman was an 8x4 truck made by Scammell on a Leyland Octopus chassis. The Routeman I was launched in November 1959 with a production run of just under 100, the Routeman II followed in 1963 with 1,200 built, and the Routeman III ran to 4,800 before the Constructor 8 superseded it in 1980. Buyers could choose engines from Gardner or Leyland. Scammell, a British maker of specialist and military off-road lorries that had been part of Leyland Motors since 1955, built it as a heavy rigid with four axles, and across the three marks about 6,100 were made in roughly two decades, a long run for a specialist heavy truck.
