The Scammell Himalayan was a 6x4 dumptruck, launched in 1958 as part of a new dumptruck range that also included the 4x2 Sherpa. The range appeared after Scammell joined the Leyland Group in 1955, when the company gained ready access to Leyland engines, gearboxes and axles, and in the same year that Walter West was appointed managing director. The dumptrucks widened Scammell from its articulated lorries and heavy haulage tractors into off-road earth moving work. Leyland later moved Thornycroft dumptruck work to Scammell in 1972, when the LD55 6x4 dumptruck was transferred to Watford.
