The Scammell Highwayman was a bonneted 4x2 tractor unit, one of the models Scammell introduced after it became part of the Leyland Group in 1955. Membership of the group gave Scammell ready access to Leyland engines, gearboxes and axles, and the Highwayman was among the new models that gradually replaced the earlier Lightweight range, together with the forward control Routeman eight-wheeler and a new 4x2 forward control unit, the Handyman. Like the Handyman, the Highwayman could be configured as a heavy haulage tractor for operation at 50 tons or more, and it was complemented by the full range of Scammell trailers made at the Moor Park works.
