The Scammell Explorer was a 6x6 cross-country vehicle introduced in 1950 with a Meadows petrol engine. It replaced the recovery version of the Pioneer, the 6x4 off-highway tractor with which Scammell had made its name in the late 1920s and which formed the basis of the wartime tank transporters, gun tractors and heavy recovery vehicles. The Scammell Register lists the 6x6 Explorer among the vehicles with which the company kept its military presence in the years after the war, alongside the 4x4 Mountaineer and, by 1952, the Constructor, while it also worked in heavy construction, oil drilling, mining and logging.
