The Mark I Riley Elf appeared in 1961 with a dry weight of 638 kg with rubber suspension, or 642.3 kg with Hydrolastic, and the 848 cc, 34 bhp engine. The full width dashboard was a differentiator between the Elf and the Hornet, and was the idea of Christopher Milner, the sales manager for Riley. The early production Mark I cars had a combination of leather and cloth seats, whereas all later models had full leather seats. Its model years run from 1961 to 1963.
