The Northrop YB-35, company designation N-9 or NS-9, was an experimental flying-wing heavy bomber developed by Northrop for the United States Army Air Forces. The first order was for two XB-35 prototypes, together with Northrop's plan to build two all-wood one-third scale flying models, the N-9M. Detailed engineering began in early 1942 and the XB-35 made its first flight in June 1946, a 45-minute trip from Hawthorne, California to Muroc Dry Lake. Its engines and propellers were furnished by the Army without being tested for compatibility, which caused years of trouble. Only prototypes and pre-production aircraft were built, but interest was strong enough that two YB-35 airframes were converted to the jet-powered YB-49.
