Northrop A-17

Military Aircraft

The Northrop A-17, also called the Northrop Model 8, was a two-seat, single-engine monoplane attack bomber built in 1935 by the Northrop Corporation for the United States Army Air Corps. It developed from the Gamma 2F, and 110 were ordered in 1935 with fixed landing gear, followed by 129 A-17A aircraft with retractable gear. It had perforated flaps and an internal bomb bay. It entered service in February 1936 and proved reliable and popular, but in 1938 the Air Corps decided attack aircraft should be multi-engined. Export versions sold as the Douglas Model 8 reached Argentina, Peru, Sweden, the Netherlands, Iraq and Norway, and ex-French aircraft served the British Commonwealth as the Nomad. The last US examples retired in 1944.
