The North American T-28 Trojan is a radial-engined military trainer built by North American Aviation and used by the United States Air Force and the United States Navy from the 1950s. The XT-28, company designation NA-159, first flew in September 1949 and was designed to replace the T-6 Texan. Found satisfactory in service trials at Eglin Air Force Base in 1950, it was ordered in quantity, and 1,948 were built between 1950 and 1957. Besides training it was successfully employed as a counter-insurgency aircraft, mainly during the Vietnam War, and rebel forces used it as a dive bomber. Some were remanufactured by Hamilton Aircraft as the Nomair, and many retired examples were sold to private owners who fly them as aerobatic aircraft and warbirds.
