In 2001 Mitsubishi was forced by the FIA to run in the WRC under World Rally Car rules instead of Group A class rules, so it no longer needed to follow homologation rules. The Evolution VII was based on the larger Lancer Cedia platform and gained weight over the Evolution VI, which Mitsubishi made up for with chassis tweaks. The biggest change was an active center differential and a more effective limited slip differential. Its model years run from 2001 to 2002.
