On December 26, 1988 the seventh generation Mercury Cougar was introduced for the 1989 model year. The 2 billion dollar redesign of the Cougar and the tenth generation Ford Thunderbird benchmarked handling against luxury coupes such as the BMW 6 Series, Mercedes Benz 560SEC and Jaguar XJS. It was built upon the Ford MN12 platform, with a wheelbase expanded nine inches to 113 inches. Its model years run from 1989 to 1997.
