Beginning in 1966 the Comet grew from a compact to a mid sized car on the same chassis as the Ford Fairlane intermediate and the Mercury Meteor of 1962 to 1963. It received distinct outer body panels, and new 390 cubic inch V8 engines in two and four barrel forms, with a Cyclone GT convertible serving as the pace car of the 1966 Indianapolis 500. From 1967 the Comet name was used only on the base Comet 202 sedan. Its model years run from 1966 to 1967.
