The McLaren MP4/5 was a Formula One racing car designed by the McLaren team in Woking, England, and powered by Honda's naturally aspirated V10 engine, built for the 1989 season when turbocharged engines were banned. Technical Director Gordon Murray gave overall leadership while Neil Oatley led the design team, and the car was loosely based on its all-conquering predecessor, the MP4/4. A derived sister model, the MP4/5B, was raced for the second half of 1989 and for 1990 with a transversely mounted gearbox. Between them the two types gave McLaren back-to-back drivers and constructors world titles, and the 1989 car is the last McLaren to have won both titles and to have finished first and second in the drivers championship in one season. Its carbon fibre monocoque used composite materials from Hercules Aerospace.
