McLaren MP4-26

Automobiles

The McLaren MP4-26 was the Formula One racing car that McLaren designed for the 2011 season, powered by a customer Mercedes-Benz engine. Paddy Lowe, Neil Oatley, Tim Goss, Andrew Bailey and John Iley designed the chassis, and Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button drove it. It was launched at Potsdamer Platz in Berlin on 4 February 2011, shortly after the first test session of the season, and an interim version of its predecessor was used to gain experience with the new Pirelli tyre compounds. The car was noted for its unusual L-shaped sidepod arrangement, with higher outer sidepods meant to clean up the airflow to the rear beam wing after the ban on double diffusers.
