The McLaren MP4-24 is the Formula One racing car that McLaren-Mercedes used during the 2009 season. Paddy Lowe, Neil Oatley, Pat Fry, Andrew Bailey and Simon Lacey designed the chassis, and Andy Cowell designed the bespoke Mercedes-Benz engine, which was also supplied to Force India and Brawn GP. The car was revealed at the McLaren headquarters in Woking on 16 January 2009. Aerodynamic problems left it slower than its rivals in testing, and team principal Martin Whitmarsh admitted the team had not done a good enough job. A modified double-decker style diffuser was fitted at the Malaysian Grand Prix once the FIA confirmed such components were legal. Lewis Hamilton and Heikki Kovalainen drove it.
