The McLaren MP4-16 was the car with which McLaren competed in the 2001 Formula One World Championship. Adrian Newey, Steve Nichols, Neil Oatley and Peter Prodromou designed the chassis, with Mario Illien designing the bespoke Ilmor engine. It featured a blown diffuser, an idea later used by the championship winning Red Bull RB6 and RB7. Mika Häkkinen and David Coulthard drove it in their sixth and final season as teammates, and Häkkinen then retired. The car suffered aerodynamic problems and the Mercedes-Benz engines were less powerful than the BMW units of Williams. McLaren won four races and took second in the Constructors Championship with 102 points.
